All mechanisms, including watches, need maintenance. To minimize the investment cost, you should always maintain watches that are valuable to you. Don’t wait until they need to be repaired. Neglecting to service a valuable watch, especially an older watch, can be a very costly mistake.

 How often your watch needs to be serviced depends mainly on the watch’s water-resistance level and whether you use it frequently. Old wrist and pocket watches with unsealed crowns let dust and moisture into the case, causing the parts to wear out. These should be serviced about once a year. Watches with water-resistant sealing may only need to be serviced every five years or so (to replace the oil), as long as their owners respect the inscriptions on the case back (‘100 meters’, or whatever). Quartz analog watches also require routine servicing to lubricate the mechanical part of the movement.

 Watch repair is skilled labor, which is always pricey. Moreover, the number of qualified, highly-trained watchmakers in the U.S. has fallen significantly over the past decade (American Watchmakers’ Institute), increasing the cost – and the time needed - for proper watch repair. If you value your watch, make sure to service it regularly. If it needs repairs, pay the price and consider it an investment. After all, “You can have it fast, perfect or cheap, but you can’t have all three.”

Well, maybe you CAN! Notwithstanding technological advances (automatic watch-cleaning machines and other sophisticated repair machinery), basic watch repair skills have remained more or less unchanged over the past 300 years. These skills continue to revolve around taking a watch completely apart, inspecting its parts for damage, cleaning, hand-oiling, fixing any broken, worn or missing parts and, for watches over 150 years old or so, making parts that are no longer readily available, such as winding stems or even escape wheels.

Unaffected by the passage of time and the advance of technology, competent and significantly less expensive watch repair is still available in many poorer countries. If you simply cannot afford the cost of repairing a watch that you really value at home, consider taking it along with you on a trip overseas. You may be pleasantly surprised at how fast, cheap AND perfect your watch repair investment will be!

Daniel Roth Vantage Metropolitan can display second time zone and up to 24 different countries. It has an automatic movement that uses DR700/21 caliber with 42 hours power reserve. There are 26 jewels and a vibration frequency of 28,800 vph.

The case is made of stainless steel and has the signature double-ellipse shape. Its dimension is 41mm x 38mm with 11.7mm thickness. Its sapphire crystal is curved. There are 2 correctors located at 8 and 10 to change Summer/Winter time.

It has a rectangular pusher at 4 that will shift the hour hand for the 24 different time zones that is indicated by the two window displays at 6 and 12. Its water resistance is up to 30m.

The dial is in either silver or pink. It has guilloche pattern depicting sun rays from the center of the dial which also has a stamped world map.

There is an hour ring in the middle portion of the dial. It has luminescent Arabic numerals as well as printed minute track with five-minute graduation.

Its arrow-pointed central hands come in blue steel (silver dial) or pink steel (pink dial). There are two windows above 12 and below 6 which indicates the two locations that are opposite on planisphere.

The actual time zone is displayed at 6. Another window at 12 indicates the time zone displayed at AM or PM.

Both case versions are available in black alligator leather strap with fold-over buckle or bracelet.

However, like all mechanical things a watch can break down, and when it does you are left with two options: leave the watch in a drawer collecting dust, or take it to someone who specializes in watch repair in order to bring it back to life.

If you have a watch that needs repair ? and it does not have to be a watch of sentimental value ? then the first thing you need to do is decide if the watch is worth the cost of the repairs. Depending on the age of the watch, and the availability of replacement parts, watch repair can cost as little as a few dollars and as much as hundreds. Once you assess the cost and benefit of proceeding with repairs, next you need to determine if your watch is truly repairable.

Believe it or not, older watches are more easily repaired than watches that are much newer. Old watches relied on mechanical movements in order to keep track of time, and although the intricate, tiny gears may be difficult and expensive to repair, at the very least they are possible to repair at a reasonable cost. More modern watches with quartz movements or watches that were inexpensive ? even when initially purchased ? are simply not worth the time and money needed for repairs.

When you are looking for a watchmaker to do watch repair make sure they are familiar with the type of watch you own, and also be certain that they are willing to work on your watch before you make a trip to see them, or mail your watch to them.

Other important questions to ask are: Is a free estimate provided? Will the watchmaker guarantee the work for a length of time after the work is done? How long will the work take? Will the watchmaker fully disassemble the watch and clean it as part of the watch repair?

Remember, the best watchmaker may not be the one who lives close to you. A distant watchmaker is only a post office away. Protect yourself by finding qualified watchmakers; the American Watchmaker-Clockmaker Institute (AWI) can help. Before taking ? or mailing ? your watch to any watchmaker, be sure to document its condition and serial numbers through photographs so that you can protect your investment as well as settle any possible disputes about the nature of the work.

Lastly, you can prevent the need for watch repair by having regular maintenance performed on your watch. Just like a car, a regular tune up, cleaning, and oiling, will keep your watch running well and help you avoid the need for watch repair.

Since Paul Cattin and Georges Christian developed the first Oris watch factory in Holstein, Switzerland in 1904, Oris has made countless breakthroughs in achieving numerous milestones in its rich watch-making tradition.
