Blancpain Leman Alarm GMT is an exclusive mechanical mens watch that was produced specially for Blancpain by Frederic Piguet. It runs on an automatic movement with a rotor with Cotes de Geneve patterns. It has special functions like a second time zone, alarm, and power reserve above the standard hour, minute, and small seconds.

These skeletonized sword-shaped hands are also found in the second time zone counter at 9, double hands alarm at 3, as well as the small seconds counter at 6. Other counters are the sonnerie state at 1 and the sonnerie power reserve at 11. The date display is situated between 4 and 5.

It comes with a crocodile leather strap with a pink-gold fold over clasp buckle.

So you have been out and bought an alarm watch. You decided to buy one because of the busy timetable you have. There are plenty of meetings throughout the day and setting your mobile to beep beep at the right moment just doesn?t cut it. You decided a simple to use alarm watch would do the trick. Say two to three weeks. Each day wind it slowly treat it gently don?t over wind it get used to it that is if you want your alarm watch to last. I know it doesn?t make sense but my dad always used to say, ?a watch gets used to how a person treats it?, sounds daft I know but I think he had a point. Practice setting the hands but be gentle don?t treat it roughly remember it?s a delicate piece of kit.

Is your alarm watch an automatic watch? The difference between a hand wound watch and an automatic is simply this. The hand wound watch needs to be wound regularly. The Automatic watch can wind itself up by movement. So in a normal day regular body movement will provide enough energy to fully charge the spring in an automatic watch. Looking after this type of Alarm Watch is much easier as you don?t have to remember to wind it up every day. So there is less likely hood of it suffering abuse.

Personally I like the idea of alarm watches as they are very useful in planning my busy schedule. My problem is I tend to be a bit rough on watches so I don?t want a delicate or very expensive one. I play squash and soccer and get involved physically at work. The greatest tip I can offer you is to tell you that if you are engaging in any type of rough physical activity then take your watch off and put it in a safe place. Tritium paint has been used on the hands and numerals of watches since the 1930’s. At first this technology was Top Secret and restricted to use on military watches.

Tritium paint on watches is a mixture of tritium and phospor. Tritium is naturally radio-active and needs no external source of light or charge to work. Tritium does not glow. As it decays, tritium emits beta radiation, which are a group of excited electrons that in turn excite the electron in the phosphor atoms making them emit photons, or light. As they return to their ground (non-excited) state, the phosphor glows. Phosphor can also be excited by UV light from the sun or other light sources. Thus, the tritium paint relies on tritium radioactivity to make the phosphor glow in the dark, not any charge from external light source.

Tritium, has a half life of 12.3 years, a half-life is simply the time it takes HALF of the tritium to decay. So as long as there is enough tritium in the paint, the watch will glow for years.

Due to the toxicity of tritium based paint, a new technology was developed by mb-microtec in Switzerland. This uses tritium gas sealed in vials. The principle is the same but the tritium gas causes the coating on the vial to glow. The levels of radiation are so small that they pose no risk to the wearer. This technology has been used in the Traser H3, Luminox and Marathon military watches. In recent years SRB of Canada have developed a similar system, this is used by manufacturers such as Smith and Wesson, Rescuer and NITE. SRB tritium is not as yet as well developed as the mb-microtec technology, only offering around 80 – 90% of the luminescence.

The main advantage of tritium in military watches is that there is no additional drain on the watch battery to power the night light source, however these watches do have a drawback in that they can be picked up at great distance by night vision equipment. It is therefore important that these watches are covered during military operations at night.

As the technology has become cheaper it is finding its way into the civillian market. Many sportsmen such as anglers and shooters wear tritium based watches with Luminox and Traser being the most popular.

Each year more and more manufacturers are bringing new tritium watches onto the market. As the tritium light sources from SRB become more popular and combined with cheaper production in China, it won’t be long before we see tritium used in purely civillian watches.

Everything has its beginning. And if you believe that time starts from somewhere, also consider the beginning of time measurements. Early people have devised a system to tell the exact date. But a device that exactly tells the precise time comes much later. Water clocks, sundials, and candle clocks are the earliest instruments that somehow manage to tell time but accuracy is far from achievable. In the 13th century, weight-driven clocks were developed. It used gears while hour hand was already used while the minute hand was an indication of luxury and wealth. The weight-driven clocks were publicly displayed on church towers, city halls, and monasteries. In the 16th century, clocks were produced using spring instead of weight. The portable clocks or the pocket watches were the first timepieces that the public can own. During this time, the only persons who can own them were the rich and owning one signified the status, authority, and wealth of the person. Often, portable watches were placed on the wall of the house. The term ?portable? though did not mean it could be carried on your pocket. The term changed its meaning some years later. The first transportable watches or pocket watches was used also in the 16th century. This time, clocks no longer had to stay at one place. Pocket watches can already be worn around the neck or carried on a pocket. The same era also brought revolution to the development of pocket watches. Mechanisms were introduced to bring time-telling precision. Some packet watches even had an alarm. The entry of the 17th century made pocket watched even more desirable. The box-like image was removed and was replaced by more rounded and slimmer cases. Clockmakers also became instant artists as they infuse designs and craftsmanship to every pocket watch the made. When Christian Huygens discovered the law of pendulum, which for your information was different from Galileo?s, clock had yet again moved one step further. The law proved to be very helpful in the development of pocket watches. In the 18th century, pocket watches continued to evolve. This time, jewels were used as bearings. This was to lubricate and smoothen the movement of the watch?s hands. In the second half of the 18th century, pocket watches were produced with three hands. In the 19th century came the glory days of the packet watches. This era brought the several watchmakers into the picture. Names such as LeCoultre & Cie, Ulysse Nardin, Minerva, Heuer, IWC, and many others were established in this period. The quality of pocket watches became better than ever. By the turn of the 20th century, certificates were issued to those watchmakers that created precise watches. Unlike the previous years, issuance of certificate became more of a requirement than luxury. And as the years gone by, the popularity of pocket watches diminished as wristwatches became more popular. Although pocket watches are not so much used today, it has served as one of the important instruments for several centuries.
